Emotional intelligence was central to leadership training. Participants had the chance to immerse themselves in virtual reality scenarios designed to help them become better leaders.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders and their teams in the healthcare sector have faced difficult changes. The virtual reality-based leadership training aimed to give participants a better understanding of how to handle emotional situations. Using iPads and headsets, they were able to experience scenarios that allowed them to practice guiding their teams through change.
“By training in a simulated, realistic environment, our product provides employees with immersive training that helps them feel more confident,” said Kevin Cornish, founder and CEO of Moth+Flame.
Virtual reality as a tool for leadership development
Many industries, including healthcare, rely almost as much on soft skills as on hard skills. For these industries, virtual reality technology is an effective tool to train staff and leaders to provide exceptional service.

Wellstar believes VR technology can be one of the most useful tools it can implement to further its mission of quality care for its patients and staff.
“Virtual reality and other technologies can open the door for us to take our leadership and team development to the next level,” Wellstar Chief Talent Officer Laura Dannels said in a press release shared with AR Post. “These results show us what is possible when we think outside the box and embrace solutions from all industries.”
By partnering with Moth+Flame, an award-winning virtual reality technology studio, Wellstar hopes to uncover the positive impact of virtual reality in healthcare to develop effective, compassionate and culturally competent leaders.
Since leaders deal with a multitude of different people in different circumstances, virtual reality is a great way to train them to develop essential leadership skills that would otherwise be lost in purely theoretical training.
Effective learning through virtual reality
Since the pandemic, when the majority of employees were working remotely, technology has been invaluable for training and operations. According to a study by PwC, virtual reality simulations have proven to be more effective than traditional learning methods.
The study found that it was four times faster to train using virtual reality than in a classroom. This saves the company time and money, making VR-based training more cost effective.
Additionally, learners who trained with virtual reality were 275% more confident in applying the skills they learned. Confidence is important, especially in soft skills for leadership, where effective engagement with other people is crucial. Virtual reality training provides a safe space where people can practice their soft skills without harmful or dangerous repercussions.
What was once an expensive way to train employees is quickly becoming the gold standard for skills development training. Today, the cost of virtual reality is falling as more industries embrace the technology for learning and development.
While it shouldn’t completely replace traditional classroom learning or even e-learning, the value of virtual reality as a component of employee training, whether for leadership or technical skills, is undeniable.
Collaborate for change
As industries around the world recover from the pandemic, more companies are discovering the need to adjust their approach to leadership training. Catalyst by Wellstar’s collaboration with Moth+Flame is one step closer to making VR-based training the industry standard.
With effective tools like VR technology at the forefront of healthcare leadership training programs, we can expect more exciting and successful training in the future.
