Learning Works launches program for International Women’s Day and announces launch of second edition later this year

Three managers from three CareMalta retirement homes, Roslynn Vella, Roberta Agius and Zvetlana Farrugia, registered for the “Women in Leadership” course from Learning Works, the training arm of the Vassallo Group.

Equivalent to an MQF Level 6 award and accredited by the Malta Higher and Higher Education Authority, this one-year crash course was launched on March 8, to coincide with International Women’s Day.

“The Women in Leadership program was an idea that had been germinating for quite some time,” said Charlo Bonnici, CEO of Learning Works.

“This was announced by Nazzareno Vassallo, president of the Vassallo group, on International Women’s Day last year, days before the whole world fell apart because of COVID-19. Learning Works took up the challenge and developed the idea into a blended MQF Level 6 project, meaning the course is delivered primarily online, but also includes a face-to-face seminar. It was so well received that it encouraged us to start thinking about a second edition, which will start later this year. “

Program creating a path for women to finally achieve their goals

The main contributor to the Vassallo Group in terms of high number of women is its subsidiary, CareMalta, with 80 percent of its workforce female.

Vella said she was eager to gain additional knowledge and soft skills which were essentially needed in her current role as manager from Roseville to Attard.

“Running a retirement home requires a mix of skills to understand the needs of residents and their families, as well as to facilitate seamless interaction with staff. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations and keeping the care home running smoothly, the manager must be able to plan and forecast the necessary resources, so it is essential to gain new knowledge about budgeting and negotiation.
