Scouts can earn college credit for completing a national leadership course

The National Youth Leadership Training educates Scouts, Adventurers and Sea Scouts on how to be effective leaders; NYLT Leadership Academy teaches them to be effective teachers.

For the first time, those attending the academy will not only learn how to teach NYLT courses in their home councils, but they will also be able to earn college credit for it.

The NYLT Leadership Academy has partnered with the University of West Virginia to offer the credit course titled “ORGL293A: Youth leadership experience. The course, available to high school students, focuses on leadership techniques and practices. Most of the course work will be done as part of the NYLT Leadership Academy program. There will be additional required readings and assignments before and after the College credit can be transferred to any higher education institution across the country.

“Emerging BSA leaders will complete academic coursework that aligns with the leadership academy experience,” says Dr. Jeffrey Houghton, Professor of Management and Organizational Leadership Program Coordinator at the University of West Virginia. “The material will explore theories of leadership and get students to reflect on their own fundamental principles of leadership.”

The academy, established in 2006, normally trains more than 300 youth from across the country each summer at four locations in St. Louis, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and the Summit Bechtel Reservation in West Virginia.

“Our partnership with the University of West Virginia adds academic rigor to Scouting’s proven methodology, resulting in an unparalleled leadership learning experience,” said Gary Schroeder, president of the NYLT Leadership Academy. “Like other advanced high school courses, young people can earn college credits. “
