National Youth Leadership Training educates Scouts, Venturers and Sea Scouts on how to be effective leaders; NYLT Leadership Academy teaches them to be effective teachers.

For the first time, those who attend the academy will not only learn to teach NYLT courses in their home councils, but they will also be able to earn college credit for doing so.

NYLT Leadership Academy has partnered with West Virginia University to offer the one-credit course titled “ORGL293A: Youth Leadership Experience.” The course, available for high school students, covers leadership techniques and practices. Most of the course work will be done as part of the NYLT Leadership Academy program. There will be compulsory additional readings and assignments before and after the course. College credit can be transferred to any higher education institution in the country.

“BSA Emerging Leaders will take academic courses that align with the leadership academy experience,” says Dr. Jeffrey Houghton, professor of management and coordinator of the organizational leadership program at West Virginia University. “The material will explore leadership theories and get students to reflect on their own fundamental leadership principles.”

The academyestablished in 2006, normally trains more than 300 youth from across the country each summer at four locations in St. Louis, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and the Summit Bechtel Reservation in West Virginia.

“Our partnership with West Virginia University adds academic rigor to Scouting’s proven methodology, resulting in an unparalleled leadership learning experience,” said Gary Schroeder, president of NYLT Leadership Academy. “As with other senior high school courses, young people can earn college credits.”

Upcoming courses

This summer, NYLT graduates can attend one of two weeks of lessons which will be held in Saint-Louis and at the Summit. The deadline to register is June 20. Scholarships are available.

Enrolling in the College Credits Program is an additional step in the enrollment process and costs an additional $25. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors can enroll. Complete NYLT is a prerequisite for attending the NYLT Leadership Academy.

If your Scout is not attending classes this summer, there should be more available next year.
