On Tuesday, lawmakers heard of a program for Kentucky managers to take executive-level leadership training at no cost to them to improve outcomes in Commonwealth communities.
The Kentucky Chamber senior vice president of public affairs told the Interim Joint Committee on Education that the Leadership Institute for School Principals program is a prime example of the Kentucky Chamber and the Kentucky Chamber Foundation marrying politics with the programmatic work to improve the state.
Shanks said a key goal of the leadership training program, which includes three days of training in North Carolina as well as classes in Kentucky, one-on-one coaching and more, is to enable Kentucky directors to be the CEOs of their schools.
Principals participate in the program for free thanks to the Kentucky Chamber Foundation’s partnership with the Truist Institute and investment from businesses across the state supporting the program to help improve education in their communities.
Over 420 principals from 95 counties in Kentucky have participated in the program, which the Chamber Foundation has raised over $ 3 million over the ten years of the Leadership Institute for School Principals’ tenure.
Franklin County Independent Schools Superintendent Houston Barber is a graduate of the Leadership Institute for School Principals and now co-chair of the program. Barber told lawmakers the program was life changing when he was principal of the Jefferson County Public School System (JCPCS) and helped teach Kentucky principals how to better navigate the dynamics of being a leader. in their school, their community and much more.
He added that investment in the program by companies is crucial as companies seek out the next generation of talent and pointed to Ford’s recent announcement bringing 5,000 new jobs to Kentucky, adding that it is important for schools. from Kentucky to prepare students for these guys. jobs of tomorrow.
Shanks and Barber encouraged lawmakers to get involved by encouraging school leaders in their community to apply to the program which accepts applicants from January.
