Hone, a startup backed by Cowboy Ventures, is looking to do just that.
The company today announces the closing of a $ 16 million Series A funding round led by F-Prime Capital, with participation from Cowboy Ventures, NextGen Venture partners, Slack Fund, Gaingels and SemperVirens.
Specifically, Hone focuses on training for leadership within organizations with live and intimate online courses led by a coach. New students will participate in a four-week bootcamp, with topics selected by the company. From there, they have unlimited access to Hone courses throughout the year.
There are many corporate training topics that don’t necessarily require live sessions, such as security and data protection. But when it comes to having difficult conversations with employees, walking them through a challenge, or leading discussions about diversity and inclusion, strong communication and interpersonal skills are absolutely necessary.
Hone provides a platform that gives managers the tools they need and allows them to practice those skills, without taking them to a two-day in-person conference that has no real lasting effect.
Additionally, Hone’s software makes it easy to plan across different geographies and time zones with our now-common distributed workforce, allowing senior business leaders to focus on the things that matter.
Personal development and leadership training has become an incredibly hot space over the past couple of years. Chief has raised $ 40 million, Medley has entered the scene with a new approach to group learning, and Inclusivv is another player in this industry.
“One of the biggest challenges is meeting the demand that we’re seeing right now,” said co-founder Savina Perez. “Global organizations come to us, so being able to meet their needs, with localization and translation in mind, is something that keeps me awake. “
Co-founder Tom Griffiths added that it’s harder to scale a company like Hone, which has so much human input, than a standard SaaS product.
So far, the company has attracted more than 100 clients (organizations), representing a growth of 400% year-on-year. Hone teaches 300 classes per month and has a staff of 30, of which 50 percent are women and 43 percent are people of color.
