FedEx Launches HBCU Ambassador Program, Leadership Training – WWD


FedEx is thinking outside the box — and the company’s new leadership aims to hone the leadership and career-readiness skills of top college students for its next wave of future executives.

The company launched its FedEx-HBCU Student Ambassador Program, an educational initiative that helps prepare students attending historically Black colleges and universities to become future leaders, with opportunities to learn more about the FedEx business. with its leaders, to develop a set of professional skills and participate in unique experiences while “helping to expand the company’s diverse talent pool”, all according to the company.

Its participating students were selected from the following HBCUs: Jackson State University (Jackson, Miss.); Tennessee State University (Nashville, Tenn.); LeMoyne-Owen College (Memphis, Tenn.); Mississippi Valley State University (Itta Bena, Mississippi); Lane College (Jackson, Tenn.); Paul Quinn College (Dallas, TX); Miles College (Fairfield, Alabama); and Fayetteville State University (Fayetteville, North Carolina).

The program will officially begin in March, with its first cohort of students participating in virtual and hybrid meetings. FedEx said it intends to introduce a new cohort each year in line with its five-year commitment to HBCUs that the company announced last year.

The students were selected based on their career interests in a variety of fields, FedEx said, including e-commerce, sustainability, IT/technology, logistics, marketing communications, sales, data/analytics and operations. Students can participate in seminars designed to provide empowerment, engagement and education, the company noted, in addition to “access to resources that will hopefully give them an edge as they are preparing to enter the labor market after university”.

Its first cohort of participating students will “help set the direction” for future FedEx Ambassador programs, such as career path initiatives, HBCU leadership institutes, and student forums/think tanks.

FedEx executives, school presidents and student program participants took part in a presentation ceremony during the ringing of the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Feb. 1 to commemorate the launch of the program and a national celebration of black history.

Judy Edge, corporate vice president, human resources, FedEx, said the program “will continue to strengthen our important relationships with HBCUs across the country. We are preparing the leaders of tomorrow, and the students we reach through this program will gain valuable hands-on experience that will help them prepare to enter the workforce, and will also help us continue to attract diverse talent to our pipeline at FedEx.”
