The 2021/22 Basil Sellers Scholarship recipients and their families had the opportunity to come together and tour Cricket NSW’s recently developed state-of-the-art cricketing facility, Cricket Central.
The in-person experience lasted for months, having been unable to move forward with previous COVID health and safety precautions.
The scholarship supports 12 promising young cricketers with education, training, employment and social skills, so that they can develop not only as future representative athletes, but also as future leaders.
On the same day, the group participated in a leadership development session with Burn Bright – which specializes in youth leadership courses – where former college and current Breakers and Blues players Tahlia Wilson and Baxter Holt have joined to pass on words of wisdom and support.
Recipients also had the chance to engage with NSW Blues captain Kurtis Patterson and Breaker frontman Sammy-Jo Johnson, who shared their thoughts on being a former academic and their own leadership journeys.
Basil Sellers AM, who launched the Cricket NSW Organization Scholarship Scheme, was on hand for the evening and expressed his delight at being able to meet last year’s recipients face to face.
“It was a real pleasure to discuss with them [scholars] personally as the induction was done on Zoom which means I finally met real boys and girls instead of seeing them on screen,” Sellers said.
“They are an impressive group and all of them have played or will soon play representative cricket for NSW. They all have a bright future in the game.”
