The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting international program funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. Students leave San Diego with a “leadership skills toolkit” that they can effectively use for their upcoming challenges and projects. The participants, who come from all over the world, form lifelong friendships and change the course of their future for the better.

Each year, university students from the United States, developing countries, and conflict regions come together to learn about social entrepreneurship and conflict resolution from and among experts.

2023 Hansen Leadership Institute

Undergraduates, graduates, and graduates from around the world, regardless of their academic discipline, are eligible to apply for the Hansen Summer Institute. It is not an academic program, so there are no restrictions on the academic field.

Advantages

Hansen Summer School United States is a fully funded exchange program in the United States and will cover all expenses for the duration of the program.

Expenses include round trip, international airfare, exchange student and visitor (SEVIS) fees, health insurance for the duration of the program, full accommodation, full meals for the duration of the program, transportation to/from campus to all meetings and activities, program materials, and a certificate of attendance.

Additionally, attendees will enjoy exposure and trips to historic attractions and cultural events in San Diego, including the 4th of July Independence Day Parade, a Padres baseball game, and a harbor cruise. .

Eligibility criteria

To participate in the 2023 Hansen Summer Institute, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

For non-US students

  • Must have completed 2 years of college/university or be a graduate student.
  • Students must be between 20 and 25 years old.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation or region.
  • Ask an academic advisor (letter of recommendation) to verify the candidate’s English proficiency in writing (a request for verification is automatically sent to your referee with the request for your letter of recommendation.)
  • No IELTS, GRE or TOEFL is required.
  • Have a valid passport
  • Preference may be given to those who have never visited the United States.
